Cedar is a beautiful wood both to look at and to smell. The natural oils in cedar make it a very stable wood which makes it less prone to warp when subjected to even the worst weather. Our hives are made from the finest quality Atlantic/Eastern White Cedar locally and RESPONSIBLY harvested in New Jersey*. Hives can be painted, but left in its natural state, the cedar weathers down with a lovely soft grey patina. Cedar is less susceptible to bug infiltration and rot. Cedar outlasts other woods and usually requires little to no maintenance. The benefits of cedar beehives is an industry-wide recognized fact:
“So what should it (hives) be made of? . . . . .buy the best not the cheapest. Use cedar. It resists most insect attacks, is lightweight and is more stable.” -Peter Hewitt for Bee Craft Magazine (July 2003)
*Limited to availability, locally sourced cedar is used when possible.
